Position statement on recent issues with benzoyl peroxide

In regards to the recent news about benzoyl peroxide safety, please note the FDA has made a statement indicating that benzoyl peroxide is safe to use and we all can continue to do so as we have been.

Statement by the Personal Care Products Council on Valisure Petition on Benzoyl Peroxide in OTC Personal Care Products

WASHINGTON – “Over-the-counter (OTC) drug products such as anti-acne treatments are highly regulated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), which has reviewed and determined benzoyl peroxide is a safe and effective anti-acne ingredient. Consumers have safely used anti-acne products for decades.

“Personal care products companies do not add benzene to any OTC personal care product. The findings in the most recent Valisure petition are based on unproven, questionable methods applying unrealistic conditions which are inconsistent with the way the product would be stored normally. In a December 2022 letter, the FDA highlighted multiple deficiencies in Valisure’s analytical methods, stating that the lab should follow the same testing methods that drug manufacturers are required to use.”

We strongly value safety with all our products. Benzoyl Peroxide should be stored properly in cool areas and out of areas of direct sunlight.

The Valisure petition and statements are under question given their flawed analytics of testing BPO under excess storage conditions at high temperatures for prolonged periods of time which does not replicate consumer conditions of usual and normal use.  Additionally there may be a potential conflict of interest in the information presented by Valisure given a pending patent on a similar ingredient/ All of which is being investigated.

We will keep you posted on any updates.
