Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids, derived from fruit acids, have revolutionized the treatment of skin. AHA’s and BHA’s are two of the most effective skin care tools available to skin care professionals.

Glycolic Acid is one of the most popular and effective of the AHA’s. Glycolic Acid, derived from sugar cane, has exfoliating properties that help to treat acne, razor bumps, hyperpigmentation, keratinization and more. Salicylic Acid is the only known BHA. It works as an exfoliant to slough off dead skin cells to make room for the re-growth of new skin.

The main difference between AHA’s and BHA’s is their lipid (oil) solubility. AHA’s are only soluble in water, while BHA is lipid (oil) soluble. This means that BHA is better able to penetrate into the pore (which contains sebum) and exfoliate the dead skin cells. As a result, BHA is better used on oily skin with blackheads and whiteheads. AHA’s are better used on thickened, sun-damaged skin where breakouts are not a problem. Sunscreens should be applied to the skin whether you use AHA or BHA. (Please refer to the section on Sun Care Products). Discontinue use if any signs of irritation appear. Avoid contact with eyes.
